Community Awards

The annual Community Awards recognize the dedication and hard work of community members across a variety of fields who have made a difference in Sunnyvale. Nominations are reviewed by a panel of former Community Awards winners and current board and commission members. The Sunnyvale Mayor and City Councilmembers present the awards at the annual State of the City event.

Nominations are open year-round. To be considered for the 2024 Community Awards, submit nominations by June 1, 2024.

COMMUNITY AWARD CATEGORIES

Distinguished Resident of the Year
Recognizes an individual who devoted a significant amount of time, resources or talent towards improving the community and making a lasting impact on the City.

Educator of the Year
Recognizes teachers or school personnel who made a significant contribution to their school, students and community through their work in education. This award is open to teachers and school personnel working for public, private, post-secondary or trade schools located in or serving students who live in Sunnyvale.

High School Student of the Year
Recognizes high school students who excel both academically and in their extracurricular activities. This award is open to high school students attending schools located in or serving students who live in Sunnyvale.

Businessperson/Business of the Year
Recognizes a Sunnyvale business or businessperson who made significant contributions to the Sunnyvale community through their leadership, community involvement, creative partnerships or commitment to enhancing Sunnyvale’s reputation as a great place to live, work and do business.

Contribution to the Arts
Recognizes an individual, group, business, or nonprofit organization who made a significant contribution to the arts in Sunnyvale.

Environmental Achievement
Recognizes the contributions of an individual, group, business or nonprofit organization that has gone above and beyond to improve the environment in Sunnyvale.

Community Volunteer of the Year
Recognizes an individual who has made a difference to the Sunnyvale community through volunteer service.

Make sure your nominee is eligible

Refer to the Community Award Categories above for specific eligibility criteria.

Past recipients are ineligible to receive an award in the same category for five years. Check Community Award Winners above for past winners list to see if your nominee is eligible.

City employees and elected officials are ineligible.
Gather your information

Select the Community Award Category for your nominee. You may submit multiple nominations submitting a separate form for each one.

While completing this nomination form, provide sufficient information to allow the nominating committee to make an informed decision. The nominating committee may not know the person you are nominating, so be descriptive in your answers. The form allows you to save your responses and return later to complete them.

We will contact you within three business days to ask any follow-up questions.

Following the current submission deadline, the nominating committee will review all applications. We will contact the award winners. We will also contact everyone who submitted a nomination.

At least three nominations per category are required. If fewer than three nominations are received, the category will not be awarded.
