Privacy Statement

The following Privacy Policy explains the City of Sunnyvale’s (City) policy regarding any information you may supply to us when visiting the City’s official website (Sunnyvale.ca.gov). By using the City site, you agree, without limitation or qualification, to be bound by the Privacy Policy or any other disclosure or data collection policy applicable to any individual City website.

Public Disclosure

The City is committed to protecting the privacy of the individuals utilizing the City’s website, however, personal information submitted to the City’s website may be subject to disclosure pursuant to various California laws, including, but not limited to, the California Civil Discovery Act of 1986 and the California Public Records Act. The City may share such information with other agencies or individuals: if 1) the information relates to that agency or individual; 2) to protect the interests of others; 3) to protect and defend the rights or property of the City; or 4) as otherwise provided by law.

Visitors are cautioned that the collection of personal information requested from or volunteered by children online or by email will be treated the same as information given by an adult, and may be subject to public access.

Personal Information

On certain occasions, the public is asked to share personal information online with the City to facilitate better correspondence, transactions and service. This information includes, but is not limited to, email addresses, responses to surveys and registering for new and existing services. The City will not sell any information provided through this website or use it for commercial marketing. Nevertheless, information received by the City online is a public record and may be subject to disclosure under the provisions of the California Public Records Act. Credit card information will not be disclosed.

Communications

By providing email addresses at registration and otherwise, users are giving the City permission to periodically send out email newsletters and promotional email to our users about City topics of interest, or for responding to a user’s request or input, or to complete an online transaction. If a user chooses to provide the City with personal information, such as sending an email to a City employee or by filling out and submitting an online form located on the City’s website, the City may use that information to respond to the user’s message and to assist in obtaining information the user may have requested.

Users may indicate that they do not wish to receive email information from the City. Upon request, the City will remove users and their information from the City database or permit them to elect not to receive any further email newsletters or contact.

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

The City does use its website to collect usage statistics for site management, such as assessing what information is of most and least interest, determining technical design specifications and identifying system performance issues. The information does not identify users personally. The following are examples of information which is collected about your visit:

  • The internet domain and or IP address from which you access the City’s website
  • The type of browser and operating system used to access the City’s website
  • The date and time of the visit
  • The Web pages or services you accessed while on the City’s website
  • The website you visited prior to coming to the City’s website
  • The search terms used on the City’s website

The City’s website may transfer information to your computer through cookies or other technology. The use of cookies or similar technology is an industry standard and does not personally identify users, although they do identify a user’s computer. Cookies or similar technology can make the internet more useful by storing information about your preferences on a particular site. If preferred, you can configure your browser to refuse cookies. However, you may not be able to take full advantage of the City’s website if you do so.

Limitations

The City’s website contains links to other sites. Be aware that the City is not responsible for the privacy practices of other sites not owned or managed by the City, nor does it mean that the City endorses the information contained on those pages. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies only to information collected by the City’s website.

Security Statement

The City has taken several steps to safeguard the integrity of its Web properties, this should not be construed in any way as warranting as fail proof the security of information provided via the City’s website.

Unauthorized attempts to deny service, upload information or change information are strictly prohibited and may be punishable under Title 18 of the U.S. code to include the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986 and the National Infrastructure Protection Act.
