The City of Sunnyvale Public Safety department is FAA-approved to use Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or drones, to help improve services to the community. We will use the drones to limit risk to personal safety both for the public and for officers.

Potential Uses
We may use a drone in the following circumstances:
- Search and rescue
- Fires or post-fire investigations
- HazMat response
- Barricaded suspects, hostage situations and other high-risk tactical operations
- Disaster response
- Crime scene documentation (video-photo)
- Flight training required for FAA and certifications for use
Prohibited Uses
Drones will never be used for the following:
- Conduct surveillance activities without court orders or search warrants
- Target a person based solely on individual characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, gender or sexual orientation
- Conduct personal business of any type
- Weaponize the device
