A short-term rental (or vacation rental) is the renting out of a portion of your home (residence). This could be:

  • rooms in your home,
  • or an accessory dwelling unit (granny flat ADU) built before Jan. 1, 2020.

Short-term rentals are for a period of 30 consecutive calendar days or less. Regulations allow short-term rentals in many single-family homes. But per state law the following are not eligible for short-term rental:

  • New units built under Chapter 19.78, Dual Urban Opportunity Housing, Title 19 (Zoning) of the Sunnyvale Municipal Code.
