A private tree is a tree whose trunk is completely outside of the City right-of-way. These trees are located on private property. We do not provide services for private trees.

Private Tree Care

As a resident, you are responsible for maintaining your trees for health and safety. If your neighbor’s tree is dead or impacting your property, contact your neighbor. Most private tree issues are a civil matter.

If the tree is causing a dangerous situation in the public right of way, call our Neighborhood Preservation unit at 408-730-7610.

Private Tree Removal

Some private trees are protected. They need a permit to be removed.

A tree is protected if when you measure its circumference 4 ½ feet above the ground a:

  • Single-trunk tree measures 38 inches or greater, or a
  • Multi-trunk tree has at least one trunk that measures 38 inches or greater, or the measurements of the multi-trunks added together equal at least 113 inches
