Shared electric scooters are now available in Sunnyvale.

City council approved an electric scooter share program. It is a one-year pilot program. We have an option for a one-year extension. Bird Ride’s Inc. is the selected vendor.

During the pilot program we will collect data on operational and community concerns. This data will help us decide on an expanded micromobility* share program for the city.

Where to Find and Ride E-Scooters

You will find e-scooters in:

  • Public rights-of-way, and near businesses, shopping centers and parks
  • Designated areas around the Sunnyvale Public Library and Community Center

E-scooters are not allowed in or on:

  • City parks, Caltrain stations or VTA Light Rail stations
  • Sidewalks
  • Streets with speed limits 30 mph or more without bicycle lanes

How to Get Started

To use the e-scooter, you must download the Bird app. You must agree to the company’s rental agreement. When ending a ride, you must find an appropriate parking location.

Read and Follow the Operating Rules

Before riding a Bird e-scooter, educate yourself on the basic operating rules.

All riders must:

  • Be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license
  • Ride in an existing bicycle lane
    • Or if no bicycle lane, only on streets with a maximum speed limit of 25 mph
  • Follow all traffic rules, signals, and signs
  • Ride with the flow of traffic
  • Yield to pedestrians and walk scooters on sidewalks when parking
  • Ride sober. You may not ride scooters under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Ride solo. Only one rider is allowed on a scooter at a time.

Riders should wear a helmet for safety. You only have one brain - protect it.

Where and How to Park

You must park the e-scooter upright. Ensure it allows complete pedestrian and bicyclist access to public facilities, including:

  • Any fire hydrant, call box or other emergency facility
  • Bus benches, transit shelters and passenger waiting areas
  • Utility poles or boxes
  • Time limit parking zones, loading zones, disabled parking zones
  • Within 15 feet of a curb ramp
  • Within 10 feet of an entryway, exit and driveway
  • Near street furniture that requires pedestrian access (such as, benches, transit shelters, receptacles)
