Traffic calming uses various devices to improve traffic and pedestrian safety. The devices may include signage, striping, speed humps, etc. The intent is to solve problems of speeding, cut-through traffic, and higher than anticipated traffic volumes.
We’ve begun a study to evaluate our current traffic calming program and policy. For the study, we’ll compare our program’s elements with those of other cities. We hope to identify improved solutions we can adapt to Sunnyvale. Through the study, elements we’ll evaluate are:
- Street eligibility
- Speed and volume thresholds
- Traffic-calming measures (devices)
- Implementation and operating costs
Our goal is to recommend possible changes to the traffic calming program to City Council for adoption. We intend to update the process, calming measures and handbook. We want your input on this study. Your input opportunities will include meetings and online survey.
