Current Status

The City held a public grand opening event for Sunnyvale's new City Hall on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. The area around the building is still an active construction site.

Construction Timeline

• Fall 2023 - Amphitheater and nature-walking trails completion.
• March 2023 - The new City Hall was completed. Staff moved into the building. An invitation-only ribbon-cutting ceremony for media was held. We began demolition of the old City Hall and Sunnyvale Office Center to prepare for site work.
• September 2022 - The Emergency Operations Center was completed.
• Dec. 2, 2020 - Construction Phase 1* began.

City Hall

This new, 120,000 square-foot, four-story City Hall was designed to be Net Zero Energy and Certified LEED Platinum. It includes:

• NOVA Workforce Services Department
• One-Stop Permit Center
• City staff offices
• One level of underground parking below City Hall

Public Safety Headquarters Renovations

Partial renovations of the existing public safety building will included:

• 17,000-square-feet of tenant improvements
• New entry and lobby

Emergency Operations Center Addition

A two-story, 15,000-square-foot Emergency Operations Center is adjacent to the Public Safety Headquarters building. The addition:

• Provides dedicated space for a detectives’ bureau
• Relieves overcrowding in the existing Public Safety building
• Was designed for LEED Gold with sustainable features such as low flow fixtures and LED lighting. It is all electric (except for back-up generators).

Overall Site

The overall site includes:

• Approximately 6 acres of open space
• More walkable Olive Avenue
• Frontage improvements along Mathilda Ave from W. Olive up to El Camino Real to include a new multiuse pathway and walkways for public use
• Civic plaza
• Outdoor amphitheater

Community Engagement

In 2015 a Community Engagement Plan for the Civic Center Project was approved. The Engagement Plan outlined a series of engagement activities including:

• Interviews
• Focus groups
• Two workshops: one for the City’s appointed board and commission members and one Community workshop
• Online surveys
• City Council meetings

These activities were used to gather input before making decisions on land use alternatives and a financing strategy for the project. The activities outlined in the Community Engagement Plan are complete.
